PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing pyridinecarboxylic acids. SOLUTION: This method for producing the pyridinecarboxylic acids represented by general formula (3) (wherein, X and Y are each the same or different and denote each hydrogen atom or carboxy group without simultaneously denoting hydrogen atom; and R<7> and R<8> are each the same or different and denote each hydrogen atom, carboxy group or a 1-3C alkyl group) is characterized by reactingα,β-dialkyl-substituted pyridines with oxygen in the presence of an N-hydroxyimide compound and nitrogen dioxide and in or without the coexistence of a transition metal catalyst.
