PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alicyclic polycarbonate resin excellent in transparency, heat resistance, impact resistance and flowability and having a low modulus of photoelasticity, a good balance between the refractive index and the Abbe number, and a good color tone. SOLUTION: In the process for producing a polycarbonate resin by subjecting pentacyclopentadecanedimethanol represented by formula (1) and/or formula (2), optionally with a diol represented by the formula: HOCH2 -X-CH2 OH (wherein X is a 3-14C alkylene group or a 4-14C cycloalkylene group), to melt polycondensation with a carbonic diester, at least one catalyst is used which is selected from the group consisting of zinc compounds, tin compounds, lead compounds, zirconium compounds and hafnium compounds.
