The method employs a vehicle (1) and a cleaning appliance (2). It works in several stages, e.g. solids or dirt particles are sucked off the surface to be cleaned, the surface is subjected to a wet cleaning process, and the cleaning appliance sucks up any residue. The cleaning appliance is located on front of, on, or behind the vehicle, and the three cleaning stages are carried out in direction of travel. The cleaning appliance is operated automatically. The cleaning appliance has a suction device (11) for the solids, a wet cleaning device, and a rear suction device (17).
