Mucous cell metaplasia in asthma, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis and other conditions is treated by inducing apoptosis of mucous-producing cells via endogenous caspases resulting from Jak/Stat-signaling pathway activation, such as by local administration of low levels of Th1 cytokines, including interferon gamma (IFNη). IFNη is administered in low doses and in very low concentrations, such as concentrations of IFNη in liquid carriers of less than 1000 ng/mL, and preferably less than 500 ng/mL, and more preferably less than about 200 ng/mL, with total IFNη delivered per unit dose of less than 500 ng. Local administration may be by any means that accesses mucous cells in surface epithelia of the respiratory tract, preferably the tracheobronchial airways, including droplet aerosol delivery of aqueous or other liquid compositions containing IFNη.
|
