The cylindrical body (3) contains main (17) and auxiliary (18) gas generator chambers, one constituting a tubular insert (16) in the other. Each has an igniter (21,22), mounted with a common control circuit (5) in the baseplate (4), a pyrotechnic charge (19,20) and a relief vent (7,8) in a transverse partition (6) with a rupturable membrane (15), leading to a discharge chamber (10) communicating (11) with the air-bag. Partly cut bend-up flaps (14a,14b) in a pressure plate (13) further control blow-through. Igniter resistances differ, with series blocking diodes allowing selection by current polarity. They are connected in parallel across a four-switch bridge. With collision characteristics established, e.g. by impact sensors, appropriate switching arrangements are selected to utilise one or both generators, if both, simultaneous or staggered operation is optional. |
