A flat electrical wire (10, 20) having a substantially rectangular cross-section is prepared from an electrical conductor (16) having a circular cross-section, first by coating the conductor with a benzimidazole-based polymer (17), then by rolling the coated conductor (15) to yield the flat wire. The flat wire (10, 20) thus prepared has a high heat resistance and dielectric breakdown resistance and can avoid dislocation or slippage when used in a magnet coil.
