摘要 The device is a volumetric, stage-type three-dimensional display. It produces three dimensional images inside of a cylindrical or spherical volume that can be viewed from a very wide range of viewpoints. The images produced are also be able to be made to appear as if the hidden lines have been removed with respect to virtually all viewpoints-essentially making the three-dimensional image appear opaque to viewers at any viewpoint. This display employs up to several thousand small light producing devices, that are probably arranged as strings. These light producing devices are physically moved through the previously mentioned volume in a manner such that nearly every point of space in the volume has at least one light pass through it within the refresh time of the human eye. Thus, by properly controlling the lights, nearly any collection of points in the volume can be made to appear to glow-and since this is done faster than the refresh time of the human eye, all the separate glows appear to be simultaneous. Thus, three-dimensional images can be produced in the volume. If the lights used are omni-directional, then the images produced are largely visible from any point of view, except those obstructed by the rest of the electronics and mechanics of the display. However, the images produced, in this case, are transparent. To produce opaque images, a complex technique is employed that requires light producing devices for which the direction(s) of light transmission can be dynamically controlled. If such light producing devices are used, then the essential result is that images can be produced such that only the face of the image closest to any viewer is visible to that viewer. Due to the relatively small number of light producing devices needed in the display, particularly if opacity is not being employed, the display may be able to be manufactured and sold for much less than what is typical for a three-dimensional display.
