PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass forming die for producing by press forming an optical element with high forming precision or a glass substrate formed on its surface with pattern of fine embossment, or the like. SOLUTION: The forming die for glass of this invention is constituted with quartz glass in a base material part 11, and a surface of this die, for example, is coated with a platinum alloy as a die releasing film 12. Thus, by constituting the base material part of the forming die with the quartz glass, riding and polishing the surface of the base material can be performed with high forming precision. The fine pattern can also be formed on the surface of the bas mateiral with high precision using technology of photolithography. So the forming die for glass can be used as a forming die or producing the glass substrate formed with the pattern of the fine embossment on the surface.
