PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display method for dynamically controlling the brightness of a light source according to input video signal, while using the neighborhood of the range of characteristics, in which the luminous efficiency of the light source becomes maximum. SOLUTION: In this image display method, a feature-detecting part 1 detects the average photometric level(APL) of an input video signal. A light control part 2 obtains a light control data for controlling the light source 7, on the basis of the difference between a predetermined reference luminance level and the APL. A light control signal calculating part 3 receives light control data outputted from the light control part 2, refers to reference light control data, giving a lamp tube current i0 at which the luminous efficiency of the light source 7 becomes maximum and generates new light control data for controlling the value of the lamp tube current (i) of the light source 7, with respect to only the component which changes in the predetermined period among the inputted control data. A light source control part 5 dynamically controls the brightness of the light source 7, by controlling the value of the lamp tube current (i) of the light source 7, accordance with the new light control data.
