[Also in Division B2] A flexible laminate for use as artificial leather comprises a carrier having at least one face formed with recesses, pores, interstices or capillaries, a preformed layer adhered to said face of the carrier without substantially filling the recesses &c. therein, a hardenable layer fused to the free face of said preformed layer and an outer skin layer adhered to the hardenable layer. The carrier may be paper or woven, non- woven, knitted or felted fabric and the preformed layer may be of polyurethane, polyethylene or vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer optionally mixed with acrylic polymer. These two layers may be adhered by (a) metering semi-molten or molten plastics material between hot calender rolls to form a film which is contacted with the carrier and passing through a nip (6) heating a preformed plastics film and pressing it on to a preheated carrier (c) forming a plastics film by extrusion and calendering or laminating it to a pre-heated substrate or (d) pretreating either carrier or pre-formed layer with adhesive. The hardenable layer may be foamed P.V.C. or polyethylene applied as a plastisol, powder slurry or fluidized powder. The outer skin layer may be applied by any of methods (a) to (d) above. |
