A shift control device (10) for a bicycle is disclosed having a planetary gear assembly for varying the relative angular position between an actuating member (60) and a control member (30). In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the shift control device includes a control member (30) engageable with a ring gear (44) to drive a plurality of planetary gears (46) about a fixed base member (50). The fixed base member (50) preferably includes a sun gear (42) integrally attached thereto. The planetary gears (46) are preferably carried by an actuating member (60) configured to pull and release a bicycle shift cable. Rotation of the planetary gears (46) results in the tension or release of the bicycle shift (cable.
