PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high quality display for both reflective display and transmissive display in a reflective type liquid crystal display device having a reflective display part and a transmissive display part. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device comprising a pair of substrates, 11, 12, a liquid crystal layer 10 and a liquid crystal drive part 19 both of which are held between the pair of substrates, and polarizing plates 33, 34 and optical retardation plates 31, 32 disposed on the upper side and the lower side of the opposing substrates, respectively, the pixel of the liquid crystal display has the transmissive display part of which the layer thickness is thicker than the reflective display part, of which the applied voltage characteristics of the reflectance is normally closed type, and the liquid crystal layer constituting the reflective display part. The polarizing plate 34 and the optical retardation plate 32 disposed on the lower side of the opposing substrates form an elliptically polarizing plate in order to make backlight at the time of passing through a part corresponding to a difference of layer thickness of the liquid crystal display circularly polarized light. |
