PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an endoscopic apparatus which conducts on/off control of an autofocusing function based on the distance between a subject and an endoscope and the time when the endoscope stays within the distance. SOLUTION: The endoscopic apparatus for observing the subject in accordance with the image formed by means of an optical lens system 3 of the endoscope 1 has a subject distance detecting section 16 which detects the distance to the subject P, an automatic focusing section 15 which adjusts the focal position of the optical lens system 3 according to the output of the subject distance detecting section 16 and a switch section 19 which turns the automatic focusing section 15 on/off on condition that the subject distance detected by the distance detecting section 16 is within a predetermined set distance and the distance does not change for the predetermined set time or longer.
