In a process for the continuous prodn. of lactams by rearrangement of cycloalkanone oximes at 210-450 degrees C on carrier catalysts in a fluidised bed, carry-over of catalyst and other material from the bed into other parts of the appts. and into the crude lactam is reduced by introducing hydroxy cpds. or orthoformic acid esters, or their mixtures with steam, into the reaction space above the fluidised bed in an amount of 0.01-1 kg/kg of cylcoalkanone oxime.
