PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an STN liquid crystal display device of a wide visual angle. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal cell having a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer held by a pair of these substrates and a pair of polarizing plates holding this liquid crystal cell and executes dark display in a state that the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are held aligned approximately parallel with the substrates. The respective polarizing plates of a pair of the polarizing plates 21, 22 have polarizing layers 41, 42 and a pair of protective layers holding these polarizing layers. The refractive index nx in the direction parallel with the absorption axis of the polarizing layers within the plane of these protective layers 43 to 46, the refractive index ny in the direction orthogonal with this refractive index nx and the refractive index nz in the thickness direction are determined so as to satisfy nx≠ny=nz. |
