PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation and the image persistence of a picture display screen. SOLUTION: In a picture display element which performs binary display, when a picture is not displayed on the whole of the screen of the display element, dark display is displayed continuously in areas where the picture are not displayed (referred to signs B2 ). In such a case, when the display element performs only the dark display in the areas, the degradation and the image persistence of the display screen occur finally, however, in this driving method of a picture display device, the picture is made to be inverted periodically only for a minute time. Since such a drive is performed in this display device, the occurrence of the degradation and the image persistence of the screen are prevented in this display device.
