PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for easily and safely making passengers shut up in a broken-down elevator car escape therefrom. SOLUTION: In an elevator device, the elevator car 2 is broken down. Namely, when the weight of the elevator car 2 including the elevator passengers is equal to the weight of a balance weight 4, the elevator car 2 remains stationary when a brake is released. To make the elevator passengers escape, an additive force K must be applied to the elevator car 2. The frictional force is overcome by the additive force K, and the elevator car 2 is lowered. In order to generate the additive force K, a cable pull 25 having one end connected to a limiter cable 19 and the other end fixed within an elevator shaft pit 20 can be used.
