PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein adhesion to a head, running durability and wear resistance not only at normal temperature but also under the low temperature condition are improved and to provide a magnetic recording and reproducing system by a fixed MR head using the same. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powder and a binder resin and having <=0.5μm dry thickness on a non-magnetic substrate via a non-magnetic layer containing non-magnetic powder and a binder resin, a fatty acid ester shown by the following general formula wherein R1 denotes a <=4 C hydrocarbon group and R2 denotes >=12 C normal hydrocarbon group) and a >=12 C fatty acid are contained in the non-magnetic layer as lubricants.
