PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can read out even a deformed document, e.g. a book document, appropriately. SOLUTION: In the image reader 1, at least the top or bottom end of a book document 4 set on a contact glass 3 while being opened is irradiated with light from a light source, light reflected from the top or bottom end of the book document 4 is reflected on a reflector 5 in the direction of a lens 7 and condensed through a lens 6 to an image pickup element 7 where the incident light is subjected to photoelectric conversion, thus detecting the shape at the top or bottom end of the book document 4. The image reader 1 moves the optical system or the image pickup element at the read out section or a SELFOC (R) lens in the direction of the optical axis based on the detected shape of the book document 4, and adjusts pint depending on the distance between the book document 4 and the contact glass 3. |
