PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which a user can select whether prescan is performed or not without requiring a troublesome operation, and the user can interrupt prescan immediately even in the way thereof and read out a document. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises a document scanning section 2 performing prescan for acquiring image processing parameters and document read out for acquiring image data, a control section 3 for controlling the document scanning section 2, and an operation input section 4 for inputting a designation of starting scanning of a document. The control section 3 controls the document scanning section 2 to perform prescan based on the presence of continuous designation of starting scanning from the operation input section 4 within a specified time. The control section 3 also controls the document scanning section 2 to interrupt prescan and start read out of document if the operation input section 4 designates start of scanning when the document scanning section 2 is performing prescan.
