PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manuscript carrier device which speedingly carries a manuscript so as to efficiently conduct an image reading without increasing the operating speed of a switchback. SOLUTION: In a manuscript carrier device 100, let L1 be a manuscript carrying distance from a timing roller pair 124 to an image reading position Po, L2 be a manuscript carrying distance from the position Po to the nips of a reverse roller 142 and a roller 145 and Lp be the length of a small size manuscript. Then, the roller pair 124, the rollers 142 and 145 and the position Po are arranged so that a relationship L2>L1+2×Lp is satisfied.
