PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader in which a foreign matter adhering to a partitioning member is prevented from adhering to a scanning member to cause a trouble when the partitioning member interposed between first and second platens is removed and a work for replacing an internal component or cleaning an optical component is performed and image quality is prevented from deteriorating due to adhesion of a foreign matter. SOLUTION: The document reader comprises a first platen being used when a document is read out by sheet through system, a second platen disposed contiguously to the first platen and used when a book document is read out, a partitioning member interposed between the first and second platens, and a scanning member provided movably along the lower surface side of the first and second platens. When maintenance work is performed by removing the partitioning member and the first and second platens, the scanning member is set at a retreat position provided separately from a read out waiting position.
