The solvent contains a hydrogenated free radical (I) with unpaired electrons, where (I) contains a nitroxide radical having N bonded to 2C atoms each bonded to 3 other C atoms and most of the H atoms of (I) consisting of nucleii of deuterium. (I) is pref. ditertio butylnitroxide, triacetoamine nitroxide or 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-aza- 3-cyclohexanone-1-nitroxide. The solvent is pref. e.g. CH3OH, C2H5OH, CH3OCH2CH2OCH3 or their mixtures. A magnetometer is used for measuring weak fields e.g. terrestrial. - Use of deuterium replacing hydrogen in (I) gives finer electronic paramagnetic resonance lines.
