<p>The invention provides for a method of providing an automatic interactive text-based user interface which maintains a record of messages transmitted and received (150) by a messaging service from a user (140) of a mobile communications network, formulates and transmits new messages automatically in accordance with an index set held in an associated database (25), and in accordance with messages received from the user in response to specific messages transmitted previously over said network. The method makes use of a plurality of state machines (FSM1, FSM2, FSM3) to control handling of message exchanges between a user and message application server.
