A simplified process for the preparation of N-[4-(3,4- dichlorophenyl) -3,4-dihydro-1(2H)- naphthalenylidene]methanamine (Formula II, a critical intermediate in the production of sertraline) from 4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-naphthalenone (Formula I) and monomethylamine using an alcohol as the dehydrating agent. The alcohol used is an alcohol that has a boiling point greater than 55oC under reaction conditions, and in which monomethylamine is soluble.
