Particulate material, such as seed 30, falls directly into the nip between rollers 13, 13a rotating on horizontal shafts 21, 22. One roller at least has a surface made of soft resilient material and the surfaces of the rollers are in contact at the nip. At least one of the shafts is driven to rotate the corresponding roller in a predetermined direction to meter the seed through the rollers at a predetermined rate.
