OPTICAL RECORDING AND PLAYING APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DETECTING TRACKING ERROR SIGNALS

PURPOSE: An optical recording and playing apparatus and a method for detecting tracking error signals are provided to change a tracking servo mode according to optical disk types, so as to implement an optimum tracking servo regardless of pit depth upon playing an optical disk only for playback. CONSTITUTION: An optical pickup including an optical branch device(40) and an optical detection device(80) makes tracking error signals detected using one of a push-pull method and an advanced push-pull method, and 3-beam method. The optical branch device branches light irradiated from a first light source(31) into main light and at least two sub-light symmetrical to the main light, to be irradiated on an optical disk(30). The optical detection device collects the main light and sub-light reflected on the optical disk. And a signal processing unit(100) detects the tracking error signals using one of the push-pull method and the advanced push-pull method, and the 3-beam method, or using one method thereof.
