PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for transmitting a character message in a mobile communication terminal are provided to conveniently transmit the character message by inputting a telephone number of an object using a telephone directory composed in a conventional mobile communication terminal when transmitting the character message in the mobile communication terminal. CONSTITUTION: If a user pushes a "letter" button, a control unit temporarily stores an input telephone number in a buffer(210). The control unit displays a message for inputting a transmitting character message on a display unit(211). The control unit judges whether the user answers to the display and inputs the message(212). If the user inputs the message, the control unit judges whether the user inputs a "confirmation(send)" button(213). If the user inputs a "confirmation(send)" button, the control unit dials the telephone number stored in the buffer and transmits an inputted character message to a dialed telephone number side(214).
