<p>1277590 Continuous metal heating furnaces BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 3 Feb 1970 [4 Feb 1969] 5966/69 Heading F4B In a continuous reheating furnace having a preheating zone comprising upper and lower sections 31, 32, a soaking zone comprising upper and lower sections 33, 34, with all the burners 36, 37, 38 and 39 pointing towards a central waste gases flue 40, and a discharge ramp 43 with a door 44, the length of the preheating zone Lp is greater than that of the soaking zone Ls. The furnace is dimensioned according to the following ratios:- Where:- L = Lp + Ls Hp = maximum height of the preheating zone Hs = maximum height of the soaking zone Hf = height of the preheating zone burner tip from the slab supporting means. Fp = length of the flame of the preheating zone burner at its maximum firing rate. An auxiliary soaking zone 41 has a burner 42 disposed above the discharge ramp 43. The furnace is so dimensioned that in use the heat supplied in either the first third or the first quartered of the combined lengths of the preheating & main soaking zones is greater than in the rest of the furnace. The height of the discharge ramp 43 is so arranged in relation to the momentum fluxes of the burners at their maximum firing rate that the pressures at the furnace entry and at the bottom of the discharge ramp are equal and substantially atmospheric.
