<p>A process for producing 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-dioxane, which is represented by the formula (III), characterized by reacting an aralkyloxyacetal compound represented by the general formula (I) with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenolysis catalyst to obtain a hydroxyacetal compound represented by the general formula (II) and contacting the hydroxyacetal compound with a cation-exchange resin in the presence of water; and another process for producing 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-dioxane, which is represented by the formula (III), characterized by reacting a hydroxyacetaldehyde derivative represented by the general formula (IV) with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenolysis catalyst.
