It is an object of the present invention to enhance appearance of an image by executing multilevel error diffusion using semi-vector quantization. Continuous color tone separation pixel data 32 is fed to a semi- vector error diffusion processor 40. Image data 34, corresponding to two out of three separations including the pixel data 32, is fed to a diffusion sub- processor 50, and image data 36 corresponding to the third separation is fed to a second diffusion sub-processor 42. Separations fed to the sub-processors 50 and 42 are selected, such that quantization of darker color components can be regulated.
