The sewing machine to attach the carrier band of a sliding clasp fastener to a garment is provided with a cutter, the end stop insertion unit and their operating controls so that the sliding clasp fastener strip can be drawn from a roll and stitched to the garment. The cutter and the end stop insertion unit are located in a wedge-shaped housing which guides the garment and which is located in front of the presser foot in the direction of material feed for stitching. The housing has a guide channel for the sliding clasp fastener strip and carries an indicator to show when the fastener length has been reached for cutting. The system eliminates the need to cut the section of sliding clasp fastener strip after the sewing station so that there are no disturbing breaks in the stitching.
