At least one fold is provided in the absorbent layer, the fold having a base line (126) extending in the plane of the layer, and a free edge (128) located at a distance from the base line. The fold length is defined between two end points (134, 135) and the fold width is defined by the distance between the base line and free edge. Maximum fold width is at a point in between the end points and this width is greater than that at either of the end points.
