PURPOSE: To obtain a discharge lamp lighting device of small size and low cost by reducing the number of parts of an igniter circuit that generates a high voltage pulse at the start-up of discharge. CONSTITUTION: The lighting device comprises a power regulating means 2 that regulates the power supplied from the power source 1 and outputs from two output terminals, a switching circuit part 5' that is connected to the two output terminals of the power regulating means 2 and is constructed of at least one switching element 5, and a pulse transformer 8 for generating high voltage pulse that is connected between the output terminal of the switching circuit part 5' and the circuit connecting the discharge lamp 12. One terminal of the primary coil of the pulse transformer 8 is connected to the output terminal of the power regulating means 2 through the output terminal of the switching circuit part 5', and the other terminal of the primary coil is directly connected to the other output terminal of the power regulating means 2.
