PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light emitting device the semiconductor light emitting element of which is provided with an excellent heat radiating function and which can be assembled easily with very high reproducibility even when a member or element constituting the device has a dimensional error and can be easily coupled optically with an optical fiber, etc. SOLUTION: This semiconductor light emitting device has at least one edge- emitting type semiconductor light emitting element, a first heat sink, and a second heat sink. In the light emitting device, at least part of the first- conductivity electrode of the light emitting element is in contact with the first heat sink, and at least part of the second-conductivity electrode of the element is in contact with the second heat sink. In addition, the first and second heat sinks are in contact with each other in a space facing only one of the two no-resonator forming side faces of the light emitting element.
