PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning medium for a magnetic recording device having high cleaning power for an MR head, free from the generation of damage on the MR head and nearly free from the wear of the head. SOLUTION: The cleaning medium for the magnetic recording device, formed by providing a lower layer coating layer principally comprising non-magnetic inorganic powder and a bonding agent on a non-magnetic substrate and a cleaning layer comprising an inorganic powder of ferromagnetic powder and the bonding agent on the lower layer coating layer is characterized in that there are 5-80 pieces/900μm2 of protrusions having 35-100 nm height on the surface of the cleaning layer and the cleaning layer contains a fatty acid amide, a fatty acid and a fatty acid ester.
