The mask incorporates a thermistor which has an active sensing end (4) which is placed in an adjustable position to detect the flow of respirator air from the user's mouth. The distance (L) between the sensitive end and the mask may be altered to suit the user. The mask assembly includes a facial mask (1), shaped to fit over the user's nose, with two side extensions (8) fitting against the user's face in order to provide a seal. The mask is made in a single piece from a polymer or from silicon. The mask has an orifice (9) for supply of gas for connection to a pipe (7) linked to a pressurized gas supply. A clip (16) and harness (17) are provided to retain the mask in position on the face.
