PURPOSE: A gray level display method of a ferro-electric liquid crystal display device is provided to realize four gray levels by the difference of light transmissivity among two memory states and two full-switching states of ferro-electric liquid crystal molecules. CONSTITUTION: In a gray level display method of a ferro-electric liquid crystal display device, ferro-electric liquid crystal molecules are positioned in four states for realizing four gray levels by the difference of light transmissivity according to the positions of the ferro-electric liquid crystal molecules. The ferro-electric liquid crystal molecules position in a first memory state(40) for keeping a stable state since no electric field is applied, a first full-switching state(60) for exhibiting the best light transmissivity while keeping small forward electric fields to be continuously applied, a second memory state(50) for keeping the stable state by the extinction of the forward electric fields, and a second full-switching state(30) for keeping backward electric fields to be continuously applied.
