PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic operating method for changing a gate position by a gantry crane capable of accurately performing a positioning. SOLUTION: In this gate position changing for lifting and moving a gate 2 inserted into and extracted from a water gate 1 by the gantry crane 4 running on the water gate 1 of a dam, two proximity switches 10 are installed on the gantry crane 4 in running direction symmetrical with each other in longitudinal direction, two steel pieces 9 detected by the two proximity switches 10 when the center of the gantry crane 4 is positioned, for each gate 1, on the centerline (c) of the water gate are disposed in a running route 5 and, when the gantry crane 4 runs to a specified gate 1, the positions where two proximity switches 10 detect the steel pieces 9 are set as the target positions where the gantry crane 4 is stopped. Thus, the gate can be positioned so that the center of the gantry crane 4 can be automatically positioned on the centerline (c) of the gate.
