PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer in which a thermal head can be accessed easily at the time of periodic inspection work or periodic replacing work of the heating section and loading work of a recording ribbon can be facilitated by arranging the thermal head to move significantly to a retreating position. SOLUTION: The thermal printer comprises rotational members 20 and 21 supported at base sections 1 and 2 to rotate between an operating position for facing a thermal head 10 against a platen roller 11 and a retreating position for loading a recording ribbon R in order to perform printing, while keeping an abutting state of the thermal head 10 and the platen roller 11 through a recording sheet S and the recording ribbon R; a stopper 45 for sustaining the operating position; an arm member 12 supported rotatably by the rotational member; compression coil spring 15 for urging the thermal head toward the platen roller; and a cam motor 18 moving to separate the thermal head from the platen roller 11.
