PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always enhance the reliability of a measured value to shorten the time required in goniometric calculation and to enhance the degree of freedom of the number of slits capable of being arranged to one periphery of a disk in an absolute encoder. SOLUTION: A code word 11 for goniometry shown by the slits arranged to the disk along the peripheral direction thereof includes a code word 18 for angle data comprising seven angle data bits 12 showing angle data, eight inspection bits 14 detecting the reading error of the angle data bits to correct the same, and one parity check bit 16 further detecting the reading error. The code word 11 for goniometry comprises 24 bits in all by successively inserting one bit successively taken out of the head of a code word 22 for detecting an 8-bit block in the code word 18 for angle data two bits apart.
