<p>Method and apparatus for compressively treating a web (w) of fibrous material by forcing the web into a stuffing chamber (13) formed between a confining element (7) having an apex (10) and two adjacent moving surfaces (3, 5). The web (w) of material is fed into the stuffing chamber (13) by moving one (3) of the surfaces in one direction at a particular speed and compressed material is removed from the stuffing chamber (13) by moving the other (5) of the surfaces in a direction opposite to that of the first surface (3) at their points of adjacency and at a slower speed than that of movement of the first surface (3). The arrangement permits a variety of fibrous materials to be compressively treated without scuffing; permits expansion and/or setting of the material by heat application in compressed or relaxed state; and permits working or kneading of the material during application of the compressive forces. </p> |
