A hybrid rotor blade comprises a vane part 18 and a root 16. The vane part has a first portion 24 forming a leading edge integral with the root and made of metallic material (e.g. a titanium compound or titanium matrix composite having silicon carbide fibres) and a second vane portion 26 consisting of lighter material than the first portion (e.g. aluminium, carbon fibre composite) which is joined to the first portion along a joint region in which the first portion tapers thinner as the second portion thickens. The joint region can be linear , curved (Fig. 5b) or recurved (Fig. 5a). Reduces overall blade weight. |
