PURPOSE: A steel plate width detection apparatus is provided to obtain reliable data with a low cost, by constituting the light transmission unit and light receiving unit with an optical element. CONSTITUTION: A steel plate width detection apparatus comprises a light transmission unit(40) constituted by an infrared photo diode for projecting light of a specific frequency so as to detect with of a coil used in a hot or cold rolling process; left and right light receiving units(71,72) for receiving light projected from the light transmission unit; and an amplifier unit(10) for amplifying the light input from the left and right light receiving unit, and supplying power to each unit. The light transmission unit includes a frequency oscillation section for oscillating a specific frequency; a signal converting section for converting the frequency of the frequency oscillation section into an appropriate signal; and a light emitting section constituted by a transistor and infrared photo diode. The left and right light receiving units includes a sensor for receiving the light projected from the light transmission unit; an amplifier for amplifying the received light; and a filter for passing only the light of a specific frequency. The amplifier unit includes left and right amplifiers for amplifying the light input from the left and right light receiving unit; and a comparator for comparing the light input from the left and right receiving unit and outputting a difference signal in accordance with the result of the comparison.
