PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a state detecting device capable of surely discriminating a state even if abnormality such as open failure of a light emitting part and short-circuit failure of a light receiving part are caused, and a dish washer operable on the safe side by using the state detecting device. SOLUTION: This state detecting device is provided with the light emitting part 18 for emitting the light, the light receiving part 19 for receiving the light from the light emitting part 18, and a control means 20 for controlling operation of the light emitting part 18, and the light receiving part 19, and is constituted so that the control means 20 discriminates a light receiving state and a light shielding state on the basis of the light detected by the light receiving part 19. The state detecting device is constituted so that the control means 20 discriminates the light receiving state when the light receiving part 19 detects a flashing state of flashing the light in a preset flashing period by controlling the operation of the light emitting part 18 so that the light from the light emitting part 18 is flashed in the preset flashing period.
