An articulated damping connector for train vehicles comprises a hydraulic damper extending between a spherical hinge joint (21) and a coupling (23) attached to the opposing end faces of adjacent vehicles, the damper comprising a cylinder (1) in which a piston (4) is slidable to force hydraulic fluid from one chamber (5) to another (6) via an external duct (7) having a damping nozzle (8), and a two part piston rod (2, 3) which carries the piston (4). The two parts (2, 3) of the piston rod are normally coupled firmly together to move as one by means of a hydraulically operated friction coupling (14), but when the friction coupling (14) is released the two parts are able to telescope relative to each other. Also, the coupling (23) and the free end (24) of the piston rod part (3) are designed to couple automatically when the two vehicles are connected. In use, two transversely-spaced damping connectors are connected between adjacent vehicles. When the train of vehicles negotiates a sharp curve, a limit switch causes release of friction coupling (14). <IMAGE> |
