PURPOSE:To provide a selective medium capable of selectively proliferating and culturing hemolytic streptococci, and obtained by compounding a component to proliferate the hemolytic strain, e.g. peptone, yeast extract, etc., with a component to suppress the proliferation of staphylococci, e.g. crystal violet. CONSTITUTION:The objective selective medium for hemolytic streptococci contains (A) the basic nutrient components, (B) peptone, triptose, or yeast extract or their mixture, and (C) crystal violet, sodium nitride and sodium chloride. The proliferation effect of the medium to the hemolytic strain can be expected by the presence of the peptone, yeast extract and/or triptose, and the proliferation of the staphylococci can be suppressed by the addition of crystal violet, sodium nitride and sodium chloride. Consequently, the hemolytic streptococcus strain of the specimen separated from the mixed float is selectively proliferated suppressing the proliferation of the existing staphylococci, nigeria, etc. to facilitate the separation and determination of the strain.
