PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field sequential liquid crystal display device which eliminates lowering of color purity of a display picture under the influence of external light and displays a color picture with high color purity and furthermore with uniformity even under bright surroundings. SOLUTION: Between a liquid crystal display element 20 and a surface light source 30 placed on the rear side, an optical shutter element 40 is arranged which is controlled to be in a state of absorbing incident light in a period of writing unit color picture data in pixels of respective rows of the liquid crystal display element 20 and is controlled to be in a state of transmitting the incident light after the period of writing the picture data.
