The method of control of a motor vehicle internal combustion engine has a temporary operating condition in which the air fuel ratio of a stratified charge feed is lean. When the low rate fuel injection stage is raised , the engine is then operated at a higher fuel-air ratio. The air fuel ratio regime can be altered depending on sensed engine output.
