FIBROUS STRUCTURE HAVING INCREASED SURFACE AREA AND PROCESS FOR MAKING SAME

A fibrous structure having at least a first region (510) defining a first plane and having a first elevation, and a second region (540) outwardly extending from the first plane to define a second elevation, wherein the second region comprises a plurality of fibrous pillows. At least some of the fibrous pillows comprise fibrous domes (530) and fibrous cantilever portions (549) laterally extending therefrom at the second elevation. The cantilever portions (549) are elevated from the first plane to form pocket (560) therebetween. In a cross-section perpendicular to the first plane the fibrou s pillow has a cross-sectional base measured at the first elevation and a cros s- sectional perimeter, wherein a ratio of the cross-sectional perimeter to the cross-sectional base is greater than 4/1. A laminated fibrous structure is also disclosed, comprising at least one fibrous sheet having a plurality of fibrous cantilever portions (549). A process for making the fibrous structur e comprises the steps of providing a plurality of fibers disposed on a deflection member (10) comprising a patterned framework (20) having a backsi de (22) and a web-side (21) opposite thereto and a deflection conduits portions , including a plurality of suspended portions (49) elevated from a plane forme d by the backside (22) to form void spaces therebetween; and deflecting a portion of the fibers into the deflection conduits (35, 45) such as to cause some of the deflected fibers to be disposed within said void spaces, thereby forming the fibrous domes (530) and the cantilever portions (549) laterally extending therefrom.
